Participant Eligibility Criteria apply to South Australian Government subsidised training. Eligibility, course availability and funding conditions must be confirmed before enrolment.
This qualification reflects the role of barbers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of barbering services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work. This qualification provides a pathway to work as a barber in any industry environment, usually a barber shop or salon.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
After successful completion, graduates can seek employment as:

Education Pathways
SHB40216 Certificate IV in Hairdressing
All applicants are required to complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) (also referred to as the Upfront Assessment of Need), a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLND) assessment, and a Enrolment Form.
This process assesses the applicant's suitability for the course, identifies any support needs, considers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer opportunities, and ensures the qualification is the most appropriate training pathway.

26 units must be completed:
• 21 core units

elsewhere in the SHB Training Package, or any other current Training Package or accredited course.
The selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

Students completing all assessment requirements will be awarded SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering
Students who successfully complete part of the assessment requirements for the SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering will receive a Statement of Attainment outlining the units of competency they have achieved.

Assessment Overview
This is a competency-based program, where assessment is conducted continuously throughout the course. Students are assessed until they either demonstrate competency in the required tasks or any identified learning gaps are addressed through further training.
Students are required to complete the written components of their assessments in their own time and submit them to their trainer by the specified due dates.

Trainers and Assessors evaluate students by reviewing submitted written work and observing their performance in practical tasks.
The Trainer will clearly explain all assessment requirements, including how students will be assessed and what is expected for successful completion.
Assessment Methods

🔹 Written Assessment
This includes written tests and questionnaires. Assessors will consider individual student needs and may provide reasonable adjustments where required to support fair assessment.
🔹 Direct Observation
Students are assessed in a simulated salon environment through practical tasks. These activities replicate real workplace conditions and may involve providing services to paying clients. Practical skills are observed for each unit of competency.
🔹 Portfolio
Students are required to compile a portfolio that may include research from online sources, hair magazines, brochures, retail and salon products, as well as completed pre-service analysis forms and other relevant documentation.

SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering is delivered as face to face delivery in a classroom or apprenticeship contract in a real salon. Assessment methods allow for the gathering of sufficient quality evidence about the student’s performance. Assessment method includes Written Questions and Answers, Practical Observations and Portfolios.
